May 11, 2012 – I live in the shadows where stillness is my treasure, but I have found a voice, and that voice must speak. I am the student, and you are the guest.

June 2, 2012 – My readings for the first week of edtech 597 point out that blogs are traditionally more than personal journals, they are collections of links and commentary on the work of others. I didn’t know this, but it makes sense.

June 2, 2012 – Six years ago this month, my grandma passed away, my cat died, I finished preparations for my fourth career change and started a new job, and our family moved to a new area only two days before our fourth child would be born (by c-section). Our oldest was 4 years old and this was our 13th move in only nine years of marriage. It was a rough month.

Simple Technology?

June 2, 2012 – Simple technology? I’ve heard some call this an oxymoron, but I believe it is a key to survival in a digital world. This article makes that point clear from the stand point of those who develop new technologies, but is the issue relevant to those who use technology in the classroom?

A Simple Joy
The following blog post was originally published on nashrualive.wordpress.com on June 6, 2012.

June 6, 2012 – Pardon the personal indulgence, but these are simple moments that parents live for (or should live for)–to be awakened by a smiling face with bright eyes and an affectionate little hug. The smile will turn to into many things today, but it will always come back. Simple joys, simple love.

June 24, 2012 – In refining the focus of this blog, I’ve considered those topics I feel qualified to speak about and have decided which I most frequently ponder and expound upon in my day to day activity. Having done this, I feel I must add an element of my professional work—religious education—to this blog. I hope to hold on to the topic of simplicity, but I have little time to follow this carefully and will not focus on it heavily for at least a few months. As this blog is my catch all, I will continue to post personal entries for my family and friends that follow me.

June 27, 2012 – Certain recent events are necessitating a big change in the focus of my blog. From this point on, for the duration of our EDTECH 597 summer course, I will be focusing on how to successfully publish a book on Kindle. I don’t know much about this process, so this blog will be a documentary of what I learn and of the process itself as I follow it.

June 29, 2012 – EDTECH 597 List Entry.

I haven’t self-published yet on Kindle, but I want to explore tips for successful self-publishing in the digital book market. This post reflects my early efforts to derive tips from the Internet about keys to success. A note on the EDTECH 597 assignment this post fulfills: because my list is inspired by the works of other people, I’m giving credit by mentioning the author and linking to the post. In other words, this “list” entry is also a “links” entry.

June 30, 2012 – As I have researched tips for successful digital self-publishing, I have found opposing views on pricing (remember, this is all for e-books). Some advocated the low cost option, even going to extremes and giving the book away for free while others contended that low prices may adversely affect reader’s trust in the product. I’m not sure where I fall on the cheapskate continuum, so I’m curious to hear what readers think about e-book pricing. I have a few questions for you:

July 15, 2012 – As a new writer, finding sources of inspiration is critical to my work. Over the past decade, I’ve learned to look for inspiration in the world around me. Time will only tell how some of the scenes and imagery that I’ve noticed will influence my writing, but I’ve begun to collect a repertoire of pictures that documents this search. Many of these pictures have been included in the banner for this blog.

July 19, 2012 – Though not as relaxing to me, personally, as the babbling of the brook, I also recorded the sound of small waves washing on the shores of Bear Lake. Our campsite was situated about 30 feet from the shores of the lake. The recording isn’t as clear as the recording of the brook, and you may notice the sound of the motor boats on the lake, but I hope you enjoy it either way.

July 19, 2012 – Just because I enjoy putting my pictures on this blog, I thought I upload a few more from Camp Hunt. They were all taken with my iPhone (which doesn’t have a very good camera), so I retouched them with the iPhoto app. The iPhone pictures were far to bland to post without some corrections. I know that I came in too heavy on the color enhancement end of things, but I kind of liked the look, so I stuck with it. The turquoise water in the second picture was very visible to the eye, so I’m glad the enhancements pulled it out of the picture as well as they did.

July 21, 2012 – Some of you in the EdTech 597 course may not realize that my wife and I are homeschool parents. We have been doing this for almost 8 years (my wife has been preparing for it for most of her life). Neither of us where home schooled, but we decided many years ago that this was a priority for our family.

July 21, 2012 – Continuing with my inspiration theme, I’ve created a poll asking about the outdoor spaces that you enjoy most. I’ve found personally that I often feel very inspired in outdoor spaces. Though an inspiring space isn’t necessarily always a favorite space, for the sake of simplicity, I’ve framed the question in terms of your “favorite” outdoor space. I suspect that, for many, a favorite space is also an inspiring space.

July 21, 2012 – “However, several students said that they were confused about how to use their blogs both in terms of posting material and responding to comments. One said, ‘I didn’t know where to put stuff. It was confusing’ and another that ‘we can comment on each other’s posts both in the blogs and in the forum, do I put it here [blog] or do I put it there [forum]?’ Sometimes this resulted in ‘a lot of people repeating the same comments they had on their blog, in a posting on the forum’ and this student eventually stopped using his blog because he felt there were too many place to have to go to.”

July 28, 2012 – TED now has a new site called TED-Ed. They have taken TED talks and and videos and created lessons for the videos. There are questions, quizzes, resources for more research, and open-ended questions. You can adapt the lessons or “flip” them as they call it. You can also take any video on the web and turn it into a mini lesson for your children or students.

Ongoing Blogging Content
Author comment – February 17, 2014: After the blogging course ended, I continued blogging about a topic that is of personal interest to me. Pressures with starting a photography business stopped this effort after just a few posts, but I have retained the posts as learning artifacts because they reflect my desire to continue blogging.

September 17, 2012 – For those who wanted to hear the religious posts I mentioned a few months ago, here is the first of what I hope will be many of such posts. They will not be directly tied to education, but to life in general. They are my evidence of life and I’ll freely share them. The references below in this post come from the Book of Mormon.

Take This With You on Your Journey
The following blog post was originally posted to nashru.wordpress.com on September 18, 2012.

September 18, 2012 – In 1 Nephi 7, which continues an account of the exodus of Lehi and his family from the old world to a “promised land” (which we call the new world), contains another important detail about what is necessary for everyone’s journey of life.

September 19, 2012 – From 1 Nephi 8:37: “And he did exhort them then with all the feeling of a tender parent, that they would hearken to his words, that perhaps the Lord would be merciful to them, and not cast them off; yea, my father did preach unto them. And after he had preached unto them, and also prophesied unto them of many things, he bade them to keep the commandments of the Lord: and he did cease speaking unto them.”

Self-Guided Teaching and Learning in the Family
The following blog post was originally posted to nashru.wordpress.com on October 4, 2012.

October 4, 2012 – Continuing my posts about family and home, I return to the Book of Mormon record to review the example set forth by Lehi and his children. During their temporary stay in a valley referred to in the record as the Valley of Lemuel (thus named by Lehi, after one of his sons), Lehi expounded his prophecies and revelations to his family, testifying to them of the Lord’s current and future work and His (the Lord’s) mission on earth (see 1 Nephi 10:2-16).

All Kinds of Mind, Guest Commentary
The following blog post was originally posted to nashru.wordpress.com on October 28, 2012.

October 28, 2012 – I recently read an excerpt of the book All Kinds of Minds by Dr. Mel Levine. He talks about how all of us have strengths and weaknesses in our minds and how we process information. As adults, none of us is expected to be good at everything, but children are routinely expected to be good at everything and are humiliated when they aren’t. This extends beyond just academic things.
