August 31, 2013 – EdTech 543, titled Social Network Learning, explores the use of social media in the learning environment. In setting up social media accounts for the course, I’ve tapped into my existing accounts on FacebookTwitter, and WordPress, and created new accounts on Diigo and Flickr. Digital Footprint

AECT Standard 3.1 – Media Utilization; AECT Standard 5.3 – Formative and Summative Evaluation; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

September 23, 2013 – First it was a word-of-mouth report that I heard a few years ago that Google has over 1000 pieces of data on the average American, then it was recent news reports about Feds listening in on personal phone calls, now it is my ongoing expectation that creepy people with Internet connections can help me update my resume and prepare for judgment day. Even though I have a tight policy on Internet cookies and I don’t save my passwords in my browser, and even though I change my passwords regularly and consider my online posts carefully, I expect that, if I ever ran for public office, there would be plenty of fodder for hungry opposition researchers. It’s a good thing that I don’t like public spotlights or offices.

October 7, 2013 – At the time that I am writing this reflection, I’ve had a chance to see only one other reflection from my PLN. Forrest has already explained the basics of how our list came together, so I would like to comment on two things that I think were advantageous about this project. First, multiple minds feed one another.

October 21, 2013 – In our EdTech 543 course on network learning, we were asked to participate in four live webinars and four twitter chats. The webinars that I participated in were about (a) volunteer interviewing strategies (from Volunteer Match), building positive teams (from Jon Gordon), managed hosting basics (from Blackboard), and something rather useless about Acrobat XI (from Adobe). The Twitter chats that I participated in were related to the positive team building webinar, a discovery I made about online plant pathology resources (a former course of study in graduate school), some promo for my new Flickr stream, and a little plug for Adobe’s Photoshop Touch app.

AECT Standard 3.2 – Diffusion of Innovations; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

December 9, 2013 – Personal reflection on my experiences with EdTech 543 – Social Network Learning.

This class exceeded my expectations in that it was more challenging and more rewarding than I thought it would be at the start of the semester. Though I felt, at first, that some of the work was simply busy work, I see the value of each of the assignments now that they are completed. Because of this class, my eyes have been fully opened to the potential and potency of social media in education. The foundation that this class has given to me has already started to yield returns in my professional endeavors.
