Design Journal – Week 5
The following blog reflection was posted to nashru.wordpress.com on September 30, 2012 for EDTECH 506 – Graphic Design for Learning.
AECT Standard 2.3 – Computer-Based Technologies; AECT Standard 3.2 – Diffusion of Innovations; 2012 AECT Standard 2 – Content Pedagogy: Assessing/Evaluating; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

September 30, 2012 – I have far more to say about the reading assignment this week than I have time and energy to say, but I thought I would give it a try nonetheless. For those not familiar with the unit of instruction that I’m proposing for this course in my EdTech studies (506 Graphic Design for Learning), I’m planning to develop a simple Photoshop training that I can use to prepare potential employees to help me with my early photo editing work flow.

Design Journal – Week 6
The following blog reflection was posted to nashru.wordpress.com on October 8, 2012 for EDTECH 506 – Graphic Design for Learning.
AECT Standard 2.3 – Computer-Based Technologies; AECT Standard 3.2 – Diffusion of Innovations; 2012 AECT Standard 2 – Content Pedagogy: Assessing/Evaluating; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

October 8, 2012 – Because of a rather crazy schedule this week, I was unable to get much done on this assignment during the week. I read through the textbook chapter assigned in the module and contemplated my project off and on, but I didn’t get to the actual work until the day it was due. I was initially planning to create a graphic that used circular forms to emphasize the sequential nature of photo editing and square forms to represent stages in that process. Given that the steps in each stage are not easily depicted with simple shapes or simple words, however, I chose instead to focus on one particular element of photo editing that is important for learners to understand: resampling as a destructive edit.

October 15, 2012 – What a crazy week. I don’t think I’ve posted anything on this site since my last design journal post. I’ve been working on several other sites that I have had to set up instead. One of these other sites, in fact, is a critical part of explaining a change that I made this week.

Design Journal – Week 8
The following blog reflection was posted to nashru.wordpress.com on October 21, 2012 for EDTECH 506 – Graphic Design for Learning.
AECT Standard 2.3 – Computer-Based Technologies; AECT Standard 3.2 – Diffusion of Innovations; 2012 AECT Standard 2 – Content Pedagogy: Assessing/Evaluating; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

October 21, 2012 – This week I continued with the changes I mentioned last week. Designing products for this new unit of instruction is more intuitive and useful to me at this point in time. In fact, the very work that I have wanted for a year to accomplish in my district chairperson capacity is being directly facilitated by the assignments in this course. They seem to be a perfect match.

Design Journal – Week 9
The following blog reflection was posted to nashru.wordpress.com on October 29, 2012 for EDTECH 506 – Graphic Design for Learning.
AECT Standard 2.3 – Computer-Based Technologies; AECT Standard 3.2 – Diffusion of Innovations; 2012 AECT Standard 2 – Content Pedagogy: Assessing/Evaluating; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

October 29, 2012 – The assignment for this week was a figure-ground selection activity. I felt that a good candidate for a figure-ground project was a spreadsheet-like form, and I’ve wanted for quite some time to create a tool like this for my unit of instruction. The form itself isn’t as much a training visual for the unit as it is a tool that must be in place before the training can be finished. Because this form and its all-in-one data tracking nature have a propensity for being very visually cluttered and hard to decipher (see the official scorecard that this supplements), I wanted to practice principles of selection and try to bring the conciseness and clarity of the form to a new level.

November 5, 2012 – Here is the image I created for this week’s assignment. It is meant to go beyond the communication protocol that an earlier image dealt with and introduce (as the title says) the time frames involved in that protocol. Perhaps this image and the first one that I created can be combined. I’m not sure at this point.

November 11, 2012 – After wrestling with the flu this week, I got around to looking at this assignment on the last day before it was due. Fortunately, this assignment was a good match for an effort to rework part of the official scorecards. This unit of instruction isn’t being designed to replace the official resources like the scorecards, but to supplement them. So why do I need to rework part of the scorecards to supplement them?

November 18, 2012 – This week’s design work marks the beginning of my attempt to standardize the look of the various graphics that I will use in my final unit of instruction. I created a banner-like graphic intended to be the introductory visual in my unit of instruction. Click here to see a picture of the graphic.

Design Journal – Week 13
The following blog reflection was posted to nashru.wordpress.com on November 30, 2012 for EDTECH 506 – Graphic Design for Learning.
AECT Standard 2.3 – Computer-Based Technologies; AECT Standard 3.2 – Diffusion of Innovations; 2012 AECT Standard 2 – Content Pedagogy: Assessing/Evaluating; 2012 AECT Standard 4 – Professional Knowledge and Skills: Reflection on Practice.

November 30, 2012 – It’s nice to finally see the unit of instruction come together. As I mentioned in previous journal posts, I’ve been working on standardizing the look of the images. I’ve adopted a particular set of colors (silver-gray, dark-olive green, and blue), a recurring texture that mimics paper, a recurring selection of fonts (Century Gothic and Pristina), and a recurring appearance in the title area of the graphics. As instructed, I’ve tried to take into account and reflect suggestions from the Moodle forums in my updates to the images. I’ve found that many of the suggestions have improved the quality of my graphics.

December 2, 2012 – Gestalt, I love this concept! My personality is rather gestalt-ish itself. I’ve always been a big picture person who can’t feel settled on a matter until I understand how the parts relate to the whole and where I stand in the greater picture. Consequently, this is precisely the challenge that I’ve been wrestling with regarding Journey to Excellence and the leader packets and training that I’ve been developing. How does Journey to Excellence fit within the greater whole of Scouting and within the greater picture of the lives of our leaders and their youth participants? How do I motivate potential users of my tools/training to desire to fulfill their role within the greater context of the aims of Scouting? How do I cater my training to have meaning to them given all that they have going in life?
